Hair Loss in Women

Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss may be seen in 3 different patterns in women:
1- Uniform pattern: There is uniform thinning over the entire scalp.
2- Common pattern (female pattern): Thinning is usually generalized, sparing in most cases the anterior hairline, with significant thinning of the top, side, and upper areas. The back of the scalp has reasonably good hair quality and density.
3- Frontal pattern (high hairline, male pattern): Some women have naturally high hairline, which can make them look masculine or older. This is not due to hair loss but rather their heredity.
Almost all women who develop andogenic alopecia have normal adult female androgen levels. Androgen receptors in their hair follicles are hypersensitive to or have a greater binding affinity to dihydrotestosterone, which may be genetic in origin.

Staging and classification of common female pattern hair loss in women (Ludwig staging) TREATMENT of HAIR LOSS in WOMEN:
The causes of hair loss in women are much more complex than the classic "male pattern baldness".
Thus, proper diagnosis of the underlying cause is vital before any hair loss treatments are attempted.
The first line treatment for common female pattern hair loss is medical treatment. At the initial stages, women may use minoxidil lotion (rogaine %5 or %2) to help preserve and thicken the existing hair.
The drug Propecia and similar dihydrotestosterone blocking drugs should not be taken or even handled by women due to the high risk of birth defects.
HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY in WOMEN:
Hair transplantation can be a very valid option for many women suffering hair loss. Candidates for the procedure must have an area, which tends to be in the occipital (back) region, with good hair quality and density.
Hair transplant can also be effective for treating female hair loss if it is concentrated in a particular area, much like the classic “male pattern baldness” seen in men.
Hair transplantation is also the primary treatment method in women:
- For partial or complete brow reconstruction.
- For camouflage of scalp scars (burn scars and others).
- For treatment of thinning in the temple region due to pulling back of the hairs.
Surgically lowering a female hairline:
Although transplanting hair to recreate a lower hairline is an option, such transplantation normally requires multiple sessions to create a hairline that is sufficiently dense.
There is an alternative surgical procedure that can lower the person’s hairline in one session.
This outpatient surgical hairline procedure involves excising excess tissue immediately below the existing hairline and then moving the hairline forward and down.
This procedure can also be combined with a brow lift to give the patient additional benefits.
